Also done during black times but at diferent black times and thus showing the contrast between a time when he was very very low and a later time when he seemed to think he could pull himself up - like the spider on the thread  - from the depths of the abyss.

Insects are frequently a feature of chemical - drug - use in dreams and other experiences and it may be that Redon actually saw that spider.
