Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

"Rain" is a song by Lennon andMcCartney and first released in June 1966 as the B-side of the "Paperback Writer" single. Both songs were recorded during the sessions for the album Revolver though neither appears on that album.

Written by John Lennon, "Rain" has been called the Beatles' finest B-side, noted for its slowed-down rhythm track and backwards vocals, both of which were a hint of things to come on Revolver, released two months later.

Despite the very matter of fact explanation of the origin of the lyrics Rain is symbolic of spiritual input.

I have added the extra track from youtube of Fixing a hole which is perhaps a bit easier to understand.

The chattering mind commonly gets in the way of spiritual experience, so in order to stop this you need to metaphorically open the crown chakra – the hole in your head – open the hole and the rain gets in – inspiration comes and the mind stops wandering

Going back to "Rain", it has a simple musical structure. Set in the key of G major, the final mix pitches it about a quarter of a semitone below this, while the backing track was taped in G sharp.

So the song is not in ET, which makes it very interesting.

One final interesting little quote   'Ringo Starr later said Rain was among his favourite performances on a Beatles recording. "I feel as though that was someone else playing - I was possessed!"'

A description of the experience

The Beatles - Rain with the lyrics shown on screen

The Beatles - I'm fixing a hole

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where it will go
I'm filling the cracks that ran through the door
And kept my mind from wandering
Where it will go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong
I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong.
See the people standing there who disagree and never win
And wonder why they don't get in my door.
I'm painting the room in a colourful way
And when my mind is wandering
There I will go.
And it really doesn't matter if
I'm wrong I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong.
Silly people run around they worry me
And never ask me why they don't get past my door.
I'm taking the time for a number of things
That weren't important yesterday
And I still go.
I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where it will go
