Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Śūnyatā,, Suññatā, (Tibetan), Kòng/Kū, (Chinese/Japanese), Gong-seong, (Korean), means "Emptiness" or "Voidness". In the Mūlamadhamaka kārikas attributed to Nagarjuna, Śūnyatā is qualified as "...void, unreal, and non-existent". In effect not matter – the opposite of matter.
It is in part derived from the teachings of Buddha who said that what we see of the physical world is impermanent and not the Truth, that nothing possesses essential, enduring identity, but that there is an Ultimate Reality that exists beyond the material world.
