Qu’ran - Death

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Death in the Qu’ran  is the ascension – raising up – of the spirit, whilst the body remains behind.  The concept is extraordinarily like the Ancient Egyptian one of the higher spirit [Ba] being released as a bird and figuratively ascending towards the heavens.

In much the same way, the step that follows is Judgement, thus the immortal soul is separated and ascends to be judged.  The Qu’ran states that everyone ascends to be judged, believers and unbelievers, the good and the wicked.

Although all are judged, there appears to be the possibility that a time lag occurs between death and the actual ascension, a time lag that can be significant.

So death involves the separation of the spirit, a wait where the spirit has no idea how long it may have to wait, and then the final ascension to be judged.  Thus Judgement day isn’t one particular day, it is a specific day for that one immortal soul.  Furthermore there is no mention of a trumpet, the wording is of a ‘blast’, which implies the noise of wind signalling the start of ascension.  Of great interest, however, is reference to horns.

The Qu’ran also says that in the waiting time after death and before ascension to be judged, no action is possible to try to correct any of the errors the immortal should may realise are going to be judged harshly.  Once you are dead, that is it, your deeds go with you

The ascension may involve the person acquiring an appearance derived from his or her former life, that allows them to adjust to being dead.  The appearance is unrelated to the time they have had to wait for ascension, thus a soul may wait 100 years, but be given an appearance of that when they died or even earlier – as a young person.  This is why the event is termed a ‘Resurrection’ the person may be pure spirit – an immortal soul, but until Judgement it will look much as it had once done.

Notice the use of the word We, there are spirit helpers controlling this whole process

A description of the experience

O mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much), and (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs). (Surah Al-Hajj, 5)

Then We raised you up after your death: Ye had the chance to be grateful. (Surah Al-Baqara, 56)

The links with Ancient Egypt

Behold! Abraham said: "My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead."
He said: "Dost thou not then believe?"
He said: "Yea! but to satisfy My own undertaking."
He said: "Take four birds; Tame them to turn to thee; put a portion of them on every hill and call to them: They will come to thee (Flying) with speed. Then know that Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise." (Surah Al-Baqara, 260)

Ascension to be Judged – the meaning of Judgement Day

It is He who doth take your souls by night, and hath knowledge of all that ye have done by day: by day doth He raise you up again; that a term appointed be fulfilled; In the end unto Him will be your return; then will He show you the truth of all that ye did. (Surah Al-Anam, 60)

Those who listen (in truth), be sure, will accept: as to the dead, Allah will raise them up; then will they be turned unto Him. (Surah Al-Anam, 36)

It is He Who giveth life and who taketh it, and to Him shall ye all be brought back. (Surah Yunus, 56)

The Ascension of all

And verily the Hour will come: there can be no doubt about it, or about (the fact) that Allah will raise up all who are in the graves. (Surah Al-Hajj, 7)

Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up. (Surah Al-Muminun, 16)

On the Day that Allah will raise them all up (again) and show them the Truth (and meaning) of their conduct. Allah has reckoned its (value), though they may have forgotten it, for Allah is Witness to all things. (Surah Al-Mujadala, 6)

One day will Allah raise them all up (for Judgment): then will they swear to Him as they swear to you: And they think that they have something (to stand upon). No, indeed! they are but liars! (Surah Al-Mujadala, 18)

Unbelievers

The Unbelievers think that they will not be raised up (for Judgment). Say: "Yea, By my Lord, Ye shall surely be raised up: then shall ye be told (the truth) of all that ye did. And that is easy for Allah." (Surah At-Taghabun, 7)

The Unbelievers say: "What! when we become dust,- we and our fathers,- shall we really be raised (from the dead)? (Surah An-Naml, 67)

But if thou wert to say to them, "Ye shall indeed be raised up after death", the Unbelievers would be sure to say, "This is nothing but obvious sorcery!" (Surah Hud, 7)

They swear their strongest oaths by Allah,  that Allah will not raise up those who die: Nay, but it is a promise (binding) on Him in truth: but most among mankind realise it not. (Surah An-Nahl, 38)

(They must be raised up), in order that He may manifest to them the truth of that wherein they differ, and that the rejecters of Truth may realise that they had indeed (surrendered to) Falsehood.. (Surah An-Nahl, 39)

The time for waiting before ascension

Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). (Surah Abasa, 22)

(They are things) dead, lifeless: nor do they know when they will be raised up. (Surah An-Nahl, 21)

Say: None in the heavens or on earth, except Allah, knows what is hidden: nor can they perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgment). (Surah An-Naml, 65)

Such (being their state), we raised them up (from sleep), that they might question each other.  Said one of them, "How long have ye stayed (here)?" They said, "We have stayed (perhaps) a day, or part of a day." (At length) they (all) said, "(Allah) (alone) knows best how long ye have stayed here..... (Surah Al-Kahf, 19)

Acquiring a familiar template

Or (take) the similitude of one who passed by a hamlet, all in ruins to its roofs.
He said: "Oh! how shall Allah bring it (ever) to life, after (this) its death?" but Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up (again).
He said: "How long didst thou tarry (thus)?"
He said: “(Perhaps) a day or part of a day."
He said: "Nay, thou hast tarried thus a hundred years; but look at thy food and thy drink; they show no signs of age; and look at thy donkey: And that We may make of thee a sign unto the people, Look further at the bones, how We bring them together and clothe them with flesh."
When this was shown clearly to him, he said: "I know that Allah hath power over all things." (Surah Al-Baqara, 259)

They say: "What! when we are reduced to bones and dust, should we really be raised up (to be) a new creation?" (Surah Al-Isra, 49)

That is their recompense, because they rejected Our signs, and said, "When we are reduced to bones and broken dust, should we really be raised up (to be) a new Creation?" (Surah Al-Isra, 98)

Closing the opportunity to make amends

"In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up. (Surah Al-Muminun, 100)

The trumpet and horn

The Day when they will hear a (mighty) Blast in (very) truth: that will be the Day of Resurrection. (Surah Qaf, 42)

They do not await except one blast which will seize them while they are disputing.
And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.
And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.
They will say: "Ah! Woe unto us! Who hath raised us up from our beds of repose?"...
(A voice will say:) "This is what ((Allah)) Most Gracious had promised. And true was the word of the apostles!"
