We are unable to work out why the resultant drug is thus the subject of abuse unless it is its anaesthetic effects and antineuralgic effects. Taken as a pill, there is a high likelihood of overdose
It is known that codeine and quinine inter-act and have an hallucinogenic effect
A description of the experience
Qunine is one of the active ingredients in cinchona bark, but not the only one. Good tonic water, for example, is made from the bark as a whole, whereas the medication sold by pharmaceutial companies is just the chemical.
Quinine as a medication/pharmaceutical is used to treat malaria and babesiosis. This includes the treatment of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum that is resistant to chloroquine when artesunate is not available.
In the United States, quinine sulfate is commercially available in 324-mg tablets under the brand name Qualaquin. All quinine salts may be given orally.

More severe side effects include deafness, low blood platelets, and an irregular heartbeat. Use can make one more prone to sunburn. "While it is unclear if use during pregnancy causes harm to the baby, use to treat malaria during pregnancy is still recommended. How it works is not entirely clear."[sic]
