Background

A description of the experience

The Wisdom of John Pordage [editor Arthur Versluis]

………. still eternity, unutterable rest, silence and stillness, the presence chamber of the spirit of eternity, the kings of kings, the rock of wonders.

The essential difference of this place is the majestic silence and awful stillness with which it is continually filled.  This is such a stillness as surpasses not only all expression, but also all thoughts and imaginations.  Here all the glory and magnificence of monarchs is but a shadow or nothing.

The first wonder in this place, the rock of wonders, is the spirit of eternity, which fills the total deep abyss with itself, with all power.  Here the glory of the power of the Deity is seen nakedly, openly and without a veil, ……… the sight of which causes ravishing ecstasies, inexpressible joys, and transporting admiration to fill the heart of the beholder, it being a sight so glorious as no words can express, nor thoughts represent to the mind, as being beyond all comprehension.
