My guess is that there is no essential difference between the mescalin experience [and that of similar substances] and the mystical experience. They are part of a continuum. The absence of spontaneity in the experience has less to do with its value than whether the mind is open or closed, whether the soul is ready or not. Other important factors are capacity [and wish] to verbalise the experience and a social setting in which it is accepted and acceptable.
Very few people do not find the experience hugely significant, although some don’t like it. They are frightened either by themselves and their own subconscious or by an unexpected aspect of other people’s experience … some go right to the One, the ineffable and unspeakable
