Selected Poems – Pablo Neruda
I have conquered the angel of dream, he of woe and allegory;
his effort was tireless, his packed footstep comes
wrapped in snails and cigars,
marine, perfumed with sharp fruit..........
Often I recognise his warriors,
their arms corroded by the air, their dimensions,
and their need of space is so violent
that it descends to my heart itself in search of it;
he is the owner of inaccessible plateaux,
he dances with tragic and ordinary personages,
at night his aerial acid breaks my skin
and I listen to his instrument trembling within me.
I hear the dream of old companions and of beloved women,
dreams whose throbbing shatters me;
silently I tread their carpet substance
deliriously I close my teeth on their poppy light.
