Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Contemplation and detachment requires that we Squash the big I am, but this quote specifcally refers to this so I have added it as an activity for ease of reference. In a sense Eckhart is also talking about the 'sacrifice' of permanantly removing the ego that occurs during moksha and nirvana and of course annihilation
A description of the experience
Meister Eckhart selected writings – edited and translated by Oliver Davies
Once a man came to me – this happened quite recently – and told me that he had given away great amounts of land and possessions in order to save his soul. But I thought to myself; what small and insignificant things you have given away. To contemplate what you have renounced is blindness and stupidity. But if you have abandoned yourself, then you have really renounced something.
