Rizatriptan's trade name is Maxalt
Maxalt is a Serotonin 5-HT1 agonist 'second generation' triptan drug used for the treatment of migraine headaches. Rizatriptan is available only by prescription in Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand. Similarly, it is classed as a POM (Prescription Only Medicine) in the United Kingdom, Italy (as Rizaliv), Israel (as Rizalt), The Netherlands (as Maxalt), Croatia (as Maxalt) and Spain (as Maxalt)
According to Wikipedia it should not be used by anyone with coronary artery disease or using monoamine oxidase inhibitors. As MAOIs are found in food, presumably one also has to be careful about which foods to eat.
It has a number of 'Adverse side-effects' according to Wikipedai, including:
- Heart and circulatory system failure - coronary artery vasospasm, transient myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, hypertensive crisis, palpitations , syncope, hypertension, hypotension
- Synaesthesia and paresthesia - Paresthesia is a sensation of tingling, tickling, prickling, pricking, or burning of a person's skin
- Ear, nose, and throat problems – tinnitus, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis , upper respiratory tract inflammation
- Gastrointestinal problems - diarrhea
- Muscular problems - myalgia
- Neurological problems - phonophobia , photophobia and as mentioned hallucinations
- Respiratory problems – including dyspnea
- Skin problems – including sweating
- Miscellaneous problems - hypersensitivity
