Background

A description of the experience

As quoted in Gabriel Delanne - Materials for use in the study of Reincarnation

I take the following example from an interesting article by Mr. E. d'Espérance, published in the Light on October 22, 1904, p. 511.

Only once did something like this happen to me and a personal proof of the existence of an animal as a spirit that I had known very well before. It was a small terrier, a pet of my family, which, when its owner died, had been given to one of its admirers living about a hundred miles from us.

A year later, as I entered the dining room one morning, I saw, to my amazement, little Monna running around the room and looking like she was in a frenzy of joy; she was spinning, spinning, sometimes stuffing herself under the table, sometimes sneaking under the chairs as she was used to doing in her moments of excitement and joy, after a shorter absence from the house. I naturally conclude that Monna's new master had returned her to our home, or at least that the little dog had managed to find her way home on her own. I immediately went to ask the other family members about it, but no one knew anything about it; no matter how much they looked everywhere for her and called her by her name, Monna was no longer seen. So I was told that I must have had a dream or, at the very least, that I must have been the victim of a hallucination, after which the incident was quickly forgotten.

Several months, perhaps a year passed before we met Monna's new master. We immediately asked him for news. He tells us that Monna died as a result of injuries she received during a fight with a big dog. However, as far as I could see, it had happened on the same day or shortly before the day I had seen her in spirit, running, jumping, circling around the room of her former residence.
