Background

A description of the experience

The Hasheesh Eater – Fitz Hugh Ludlow

While the music was pouring through the great heavens above me, I became conscious of a numerical order which ran through it and in marking this order, I beheld it transferred to every movement of the universe. Every sphere wheeled on in its orbit, every emotion of the soul arose and fell, every smallest moss and fungus germinated and grew according to some peculiarity of numbers which severally governed them, and was most admirably typified by them in return.

An exquisite harmony of proportion reigned through space and I seemed to realise that the music which I heard was but this numerical harmony making itself objective through time development of a grand harmony of tones.
