Type of Spiritual Experience
A description of the experience
from Reinhold Messner – The Naked Mountain
Felix Kuen and Peter Scholz stood on top of the 8125m peak of Nanga Parbat, one day after we had. On their way up they had heard some cries for help and in the late hours of that morning had briefly been in radio contact with me.
They reported this, upon their return to camp 4 together with the fact that they had found a piece of felt.
Just like us, Felix Kuen had apparently suffered from hallucinations on his way down, due to exhaustion and a lack of oxygen.
Kuen: 'I was often in a state of trance through the lower section of the Merkl couloir. I suddenly saw hundreds of little men climbing up to Camp 5. They were Japanese. They wanted to pass us and storm the summit. Our summit! My summit!
I called over to Peter Scholz: "The Japanese are coming! Do you see them?"
"You're going mad!” said Peter, “you are crazy!”
