Korean Shamanist Ritual - Symbols and Dramas of Transformation - Daniel Kister
The individual that takes shape in the Korean rite is, in the Asian manner, an individual member of a family. He or she confesses offenses both perpetrated against and received from others in the family group in semi-public, dramatic, non-juridical discourse with other members of the family, living and dead.
The discourse takes place, not as required by a social institution of power like the Church, but from a freely felt human need for reconciliation. As an aid to fostering reconciliation, moreover, it commonly employs humour.
