Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Athene was the goddess of wisdom. The Stoic commentators allegorized Athene as the embodiment of "wisdom" or "wise counsel. And she acquired functions associated with war and the defence of towns – so strategic thinking – a subset of wisdom. She was often depicted crowned with a crested helm, armed with shield and spear, and wearing the snake-trimmed aegis cloak wrapped around her breast and arm, adorned with the monstrous head of the Gorgon.
