A description of the experience

from Myths Mysteries and Folklore

I see some people are sharing ghost stories, I'd like to offer mine from when I was 11...

My mother cared for a girl with epilepsy at my old school. She was no more than 6years old and lived a few doors away from us in the army barracks. One night her mother went to see friends and left her and her two brothers (11 and 13) alone. Their dog  knocked a candle over some wires and started a huge electrical fire, which spread to the entire house.

The brothers jumped out the top window, coming away with ankle injuries only. Poor Shelley was probably knocked out from the medication that she took, as the story goes, that she remained in her bed. Another story was that she was found at the top of the stairs. Either way, when the fire brigade found her, she was alive, burnt, but died of smoke inhalation at the hospital.

Like most army families, they were due to move with their regiment every few years. This family decided to go back to Scotland a few weeks later, to remain with their extended family.

Army barracks work quite fast at repairing a house and filling it with a new family, usually a small handful of weeks. For some reason, this one took longer. The hole in the roof was the last to be repaired.

A few months later, I woke in my bed to find this girl, cross legged at the end of my bed. I was startled but not scared. I believe I'd seen ghosts before so I didn't feel frightened, just confused why she was visiting me. She was on the bed, pointing to my bedroom wall. I asked her what she wanted but she kept pointing. She did this for maybe half a minute, then disappeared.

The next morning, I'm out playing with friends, and i see that people are moving into Shelley's house. Thinking back, this is the direction Shelley was pointing.

I'm not sure if I was meant to help her find something, or do something, but I'd never seen Shelley again. Her family.moved away almost immediately, so why Shelley stayed behind I'll never know.

I'm 37 now, and that image of that beautiful girl will stay with me
