Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Jung was very ill and in hospital after having had a heart attack when he had this vision.  He was hovering between life and death and many times seemed to be dying.  It was also during this period he had a huge number of vivid visions

A description of the experience

From below from the direction of Europe, an image floated up.  It was my doctor – or rather his likeness – framed by a golden chain or a golden laurel wreath …. As he stood before me, a mute exchange of thought took place between us.  My doctor had been delegated by the earth to …. tell me that there was a protest against me going away.  I had no right to leave earth and must return.  The moment I heard that, the vision ceased

Later Jung realised …

Suddenly the terrifying thought came to me that my doctor would have to die in my stead

He tries to explain and even warn the doctor to no avail

In actual fact I was his last patient.  On 4th April 1944, I was allowed to sit up on the edge of my bed for the first time since the beginning of my illness and on this same day my doctor took to his bed and did not leave it.  I heard he was having intermittent attacks of fever.  Soon afterwards he died of septicaemia

The source of the experience

Jung, Carl Gustav
