A typical chance encounter with a paradise world was reported at the turn of the century by J. W. Skilton, a railway engineer working in Jacksonville, Florida. At the time, Skilton later explained to investigators that he was loading crates one day when suddenly a radiant apparitional being appeared at his side. The being beckoned him to follow, and soon the startled engineer found himself floating over the countryside.
A vast panorama of beauty spread beneath him. In the distance he saw a glittering world.
"The beauties . . . were beyond any human being to describe," he later wrote. Skilton alighted there and found himself surrounded by music and more apparitions. He recognized some of them as dead and departed relatives. But before he could make contact with them, his radiant companion reappeared and whisked him back to his body.
Skilton's co-workers told the startled man that for the past several minutes he had not uttered a single word. He had merely carried on his tedious work with unbelievable ease.
