Background

A description of the experience

Ipratropium  - Ipratropium is the semisynthetic isopropryl derivative of atropine. Trade names include Atrovent , Apovent, and Aerovent. It is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute asthma. It blocks the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the smooth muscles of the bronchi in the lungs, opening the bronchi. The drug is used in form of a salt, ipratropium bromide.

Ipratropium blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, without specificity for subtypes. In effect it is a nonselective muscarinic antagonist. Ipratropium is a derivative of atropine [see separate entry] but is a quaternary amine and therefore does not cross the blood–brain barrier, which means its effects are not caused by any impact on the CNS. But as we can see it has caused a considerable number of hallucinations.

On Jan, 02, 2017 8,612 people reported to have side effects when taking Ipratropium Bromide.  Among them, 61 people (0.71%) have Hallucination
