The Art of Dying – Drs Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick
Carole McEntee-Taylor's mother had just recovered from a very debilitating stroke, was diabetic and had high blood pressure and lived in fear of having another stroke.
On 15 July 1998 I awoke up at just after 4 a.m. for no obvious reason. I did not need a drink or to go to the toilet or anything. I felt incredibly happy, at peace and joyful. I felt so good that I got out of bed, went downstairs and just looked out at the sky for a while. I then went back to bed. At just after 5 a.m. my father rang me to say that he had gone to wake my mother for her hospital appointment and she was dead.
My daughter at the time was living with her boyfriend and I did not see her or speak to her until later that day. When I did, one of the first things she said, was that she had woken up at about 4 a.m. that morning for no particular reason but that she had felt incredibly happy and at peace. We both knew that it was my mother saying goodbye and, letting us know that she was happy and at peace.
