A description of the experience
Hypnerotomachia Poliphili – Francesca Colonna [translated by Joscelyn Godwin]
The nymphs continued, fluttering their tongues against their sonorous palates and dividing and trilling even the shortest flagged notes into two and three. First they sang in pairs, then in threes, then in four parts and lastly in all six, their tremulous, rosy little lips opening moderately and closing neatly. They performed the well modulated airs in musical rhythm, with a voice that was honey to the hot and swooning heart and its tiring postponement of love; and sometimes their voice sighed and gently sobbed, so as to make one forget and neglect one's natural desires
