Background
A description of the experience
From At Gautier’s Grave – Victor Hugo [translated by Robert Lowell]
Yes, I listen; the great wind dies away,
I feel the summit’s sinister cold breath,
I hurry. Do not close the gate of death,
For when my friends die, I start back and see
Their fixed eyes draw me to infinity;
I have begun to die by being alone,
I banished here, I who must soon be gone;
My night is breaking vaguely into stars
My too long thread thrills, quivers for the shears.
