Background

Crime of the Century was the third studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in September 1974 on A&M Records. It was Supertramp's commercial breakthrough in both the US and UK, aided by the UK hit "Dreamer" and the US hit "Bloody Well Right".

It was a UK Top 10 album and a US Top 40 album, eventually being certified Gold in the US in 1977 after the release of Even in the Quietest Moments.... The album was Supertramp's first to feature drummer Bob Siebenberg (at the time credited as Bob C. Benberg), woodwinds player John Anthony Helliwell, bassist Dougie Thomson, and co-producer Ken Scott. The album has received critical acclaim, including its inclusion in Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time".

The album's dedication reads "To Sam", which is a nickname for Stanley August Miesegaes, the Dutch millionaire who supported the band financially from 1969–72

The album, "Crime of the Century," went to No 1 in England. The band had lived together those recording months. What does "Crime of the Century" mean? "We've never really given a satisfactory answer," evaded Hodgson.  "A lot of people consider it a concept album. Actually it did fall together, but it took a long time to find the right songs and put them in order".

Roger: "I was a boy of many dreams and now I'm a man of many dreams."

A description of the experience

Dreamer

Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no
I said dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no
I said - "Far out - what a day, a year, a life it is!"
You know - well you know you had it comin' to you
Now, there's not a lot I can do

Dreamer, you stupid little dreamer
So now you put your head in your hands, oh no
I said - "Far out, what a day, a year, a laugh it is!"
You know - Well you know, you had it comin' to you
Now there's not a lot I can do

Well work it out someday

If I could see something
You can see anything you want, boy
If I could be someone
You can be anyone, celebrate boy

If I could do something
Well you can do something
If I could do anything
Well can you do something out of this world?

Take a dream on a Sunday
Take a life, take a holiday
Take a lie, take a dreamer
Dream, dream, dream, dream,
dream along..

Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no
I said dreamer you're nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head oh no
Oh no!
