Background

The sense of impending doom from the climate problems and rise of materialism is very tangible..........

ROGER HODGSON Interview, Madrid, 2nd June 2000 - On 10 August 2010 [BIS]

JC.- And are we actually heading for a showdown? What do you think?

RH.- Well I think we're definitely in for some surprises, yeah. We seem to be ignoring all the warning signs...

JC.- But something is happening...

RH.- Everywhere... yeah! I mean, economic prosperity has made us so very complacent and apathetic, and I think apathy is the most dangerous thing in the world today... really. And it's very easy to be when you're comfortable... and meanwhile the earth is suffering, the ocean is suffering, the environment is suffering, the air is suffering... the quality of life can be really pretty scaring. So, there's gonna be a wake up call at some point, maybe ten maybe fifty years, who knows...

JC.- About Hungry you have already told us, but anyway was it your idea to chose it as a single? Are you happy with the final result?

RH.- Yeah, I'm happy,………………..

JC.- Death And A Zoo is a great song as well, and it's got something special,... I feel particularly moved by it because I work with captive animals, and I know how stressed they might be... although I know you actually refer to us, human beings caught in a cage in a way...
Are you happy with the final result of the song in the album? …....

RH.- Yeah, it was a difficult song. I'm not totally happy with it on the record. …. the animal chase doesn't have the crescendo that I wanted, I want a really build up and then have a... (Rogers claps his hands once).

JC.- But it's stressful.

RH.- Yeah, it's a great idea, a lot of it works, but I wanted it to even get more scary before a creaking door... SLAM!
(Roger imitates the slam sound of a big door...) I couldn't find that...

A description of the experience

ROGER HODGSON - In Jeopardy

In jeopardy, in jeopardy - I feel I'm about to cry
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - oh, tell me the reason why
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - I'm watching the feeling grow
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - oh, tell me; I want to know
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - the writing is on the wall
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - I can't seem to sleep at all
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - we utter a lonely cry
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - who cares if we live or die?

Who's in your mind, who's in your conscience?
Part of the crime, part of the nonsense
Do what we can, pray for tomorrow
Living our lives, watching, waiting, feeling as much as we can

In jeopardy, in jeopardy - so, where is the golden age?
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - we're ready to turn the page
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - it's getting so out of hand
In jeopardy, in jeopardy - I wish I could understand

Who's in your mind, who's in your conscience?
Part of the crime, part of the nonsense
Do what we can, pray for tomorrow
Living our lives, watching, waiting, working, playing
Singing, dancing, running as fast as we can
