Upon the other side-wall, amid a thicket of stains and scorchings, loomed two more figures of life size, a man and a woman, side by side.
They were not ungracefully proportioned, they were as though separately dancing; they looked towards each other, aware askance of the figure opposite them. They were attended by smaller satellites, who became more indistinct….
There were ugly, bestial shapes in the black corners; stages, they seemed, in a process of transformation from men to demons. For these uncouth forms I learnt names soon enough
