L’Autre nuit

L’autre nuit, j’ai reve que les dieux etaient morts
Toute foi s’ecroulait (Sans crainte et sans remords,
Un grand savant, par des calculs mathematiques
Ayant prouve le vide au sein des cieux antiques
Et le néant du songe ou s’egarait en vain
Notre esprit, assoife de mystere divin)
On voyait, par les jours et les morne nuitees
Sangloter les chretiens, et palir les athees
Et les juifs polluter de cendres leurs cheveux

Nul Etre qu’on craignit ne dirait plus ‘Je veux!
Par la bouche d’un pretre, a la foule infidel
On ne cueillerait plus de lys ni d’asphodele
Pour orner les autels ou fleurir les tombeux
Toute Esperance irait, eparse par lambeaux
Si dissoudre sous l’herbe avec la chair humaine
Adieu les Inspires qu’une Voix d’en haut mene
Par l’hostile univers – debiles et puissants
Adieu le temple!  Adieu les nuages d’encens
Hantés de visions mystiques

La detresse
Invincible étreignait la Terre pécheresse
Non point qu’elle pleurât le ciel désert, les dieux
Chasses par un mortel des séjour radieux
Mais l’Homme avait compris, plus tremblant et livide
Que Satan n’est par mort, que ‘Enfer n’est pas vide

The other night

The other night I dreamed that the gods had died
All faith was collapsing (Without fear and without remorse,
A great scholar, by mathematical calculations
Having proved that ancient heaven was just a vacuum,
 - And the emptiness of the dream, where our spirit wandered
In vain, thirsting for divine mystery)
We saw, for days and dreary overnights
The Christians sobbing, and the atheists turn pale
And the Jews pollute their hair with ash

No Being afraid that no one would say 'I want!
From the mouth of a priest, to the infidel crowd
 -   No more to pick the lilies or the asphodel
To adorn the altars or flower cover the tombs
 -  All Hope shredded into tatters
Dissolved under the grass along with human flesh
 - Goodbye to the inspired by a Voice from high
By a hostile universe – stupid and powerful
 - Farewell the temple! Farewell clouds of incense
Haunted by mystical visions

Distress
Invincibly clutching sinful Earth
Not that she wept - the desert sky, - the gods
Hunted by a mortal of radiant stay….
But Man now understood, trembling and ghastly
That Satan is not dead, that hell is not empty
