A description of the experience

Hymne Intime

Intimate anthem
In the call of the matins bell on Sunday
In the distant evening angelus
In the dress of the choir boys in white robes
Who walk, swinging the censer
In the ample voice of the organ, and in the apotheosis
That tolls on the gold setting sun
In the enervating smell of incense,  in the stance
Of an old priest at the bedside of the dead
In the procession where the massed crowd
Go, slowly, chanting in chorus
In all this, I sense my thoughts perish
Grow tender, despite myself,
And in a shuddering peak of mystic ecstasy
I wonder with emotion
What sort of involuntary and superb song
Vibrates and sings in the very depths of me
