Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Dr Thomas Lewis from the University of California’s School of Psychiatric Medicine hypothesises that romantic love is rooted in our earliest infantile experiences with intimacy. According to this theory we love whom we love not so much because of the future we hope to build but because of the past we hope to reclaim. If a person feels right, therefore, it is because they have a certain look, smell or touch that activates buried memories.

I'm afraid this is a send up of such theories

A description of the experience

Hey Papa, hey Papa hold my sticky hand
Play with me, play with me, isn’t life grand
Here Papa, look Papa, play with me here
Just wiggle it slowly, it’ll all become clear

Oh God Papa, God Papa, do it but faster
It reminds of role games with Dad as the master
It reminds me of cuddles and shadows on the wall
No I’m lying, it’s nothing like these things at all

Oh God Papa, God Papa, do it again
It reminds of walking with Dad in the rain
It reminds me of him and me when I was small
No I’m lying, it’s nothing like these things at all

Oh God Papa, God Papa, you’re stiff and hard
It reminds of ball games with Dad in the yard
It reminds me of him catching me lest I fall
No I’m lying, its nothing like these things at all

Oh God Papa, God Papa, you taste real nice
It reminds me of having my first cherry ice
It reminds me of sweeties and sherbets from a stall
No I’m lying, its nothing like these things at all!
