The print seems clear enough until one tries to read it, then the letters become blurred or run together, or fade away, or change to others.
Each line, or in some cases each word, must be held by an effort of the will until its meaning has been grasped; then it is released – on which it becomes blotted out or changed – and the next held in its turn and so on. Other people have told me that they find the same difficulty in reading dream literature; but I have not as yet seen any really satisfactory theory to account for it
