Father Bernabe Cobo - Inca Religion and Customs [translated by Roland Hamilton]
There are two substantial things upon which the Inca are all agreed with no discrepancies among them [(so far as this can be determined).
The first was knowing about the immortality of the soul, and that man is composed of more tha meets the eye............
Some believed that after the immortal soul had left the body, if the person had been good, that person would become a star, and in this way, all the stars in heaven were born...
Others held that the souls that left human bodies in some places came back to be born again in other places and that when these souls left this life for good .... the soul would receive a reward or punishment according to what they deserved..
Some thought that the souls of some of the deceased remained in this world and that in some cases the souls were happy and sometimes afflicted. Thus, they went wandering around alone... These souls or their apparitions would customarily visit the members of their family and other people as a sign that those visited were to die.
