Background

A description of the experience

Professor Ernesto Bozzano - The parapsychological manifestations of animals - 130 cases proving animal mediumistic abilities

The following case is taken from the Proceedings of the S. P. R., vol. XIV, p. 285; it is reported by Mrs. Mary Magot:

In 1883, we were staying at the English Hotel in Menton.

At home in Norfolk, I had left a small yellow-black terrier dog called Judy, my pet. I had entrusted it to the care of our gardener.

One day, while I was sitting at the hotel table , I suddenly saw my little dog walking through the room. Without thinking, I cried out,

"Look, who is it here, Judy!"

There was no dog in the hotel. As soon as I could go up to my daughter's room, who was sick and in bed, I told her about it.

A few days later I received a letter in which I was told that Judy, after going out in the morning with the gardener for her daily walk, had been struck by a sudden illness, around lunchtime and died within half an hour.

A lot of time has passed since then, and I can no longer remember exactly if there was a match between the dates. My impression, however, was that the little dog had died precisely the night I saw it.

Mrs. Magot's daughter, Mrs. Wodehouse, at Myers' request, sent him the newspaper she was taking during her stay in Menton. It talks about the case that happened to her mother, in the following terms: "March 24, 1883, Mother, during dinner, saw Judy's ghost!" The same lady told Myers about her memories on this subject; I take the following lines from them:

I remember perfectly well that my father, my mother, my sister, Mrs. Algernon Law and my cousin, Miss Dawnay, all came into my room together and laughed as they told me that the mother had seen Judy walking through the room while we were at table. My mother was so sure of what she had noticed that someone, my father I believe, went to ask a boy in the hotel if there were any dogs in the establishment, to which he was replied in the negative.

For further information in this regard, I refer to the volume of Proceedings, loc. cit., and the Journal of the S. P. R., vol. VII, p. 243.
