NOTES on this case by Professor Ernesto Bozzano
How strange and striking is this story of a dog cruelly and unjustly killed by a wicked master and manifesting itself to his wife on the eve of his arrest, just when he is about to be sentenced to pay part of the price for his misdeeds. However, and precisely because of this coincidence, if the episode cannot be explained by telepathic clairvoyance, it can be considered from another point of view than that of the survival of the animal "psyche".
Indeed, it seems that it can be reduced to an episode of symbolic-premonitory vision. In this case, the appearance of the ghost of the animal sacrificed by the one to be arrested would not be of an objective nature, but would constitute a symbol transmitted telepathically by a human spiritual entity, united by emotional ties to the recipient.
A variation of this same explanation would consist in supposing that the spiritual entity in question has, on the contrary, lent itself to helping the dog's mind to manifest itself objectively to the recipient, always in a symbolic-premonitory capacity. In this case, the ghost of the dog would keep his spiritual identity.
In any event, and whatever explanation we prefer to give to the problem, it is certain that the above fact theoretically does not provide a sufficient basis for us to make a firm statement about its origin.
A description of the experience
Professor Ernesto Bozzano - The parapsychological manifestations of animals - 130 cases proving animal mediumistic abilities
Case 119. - (Visual.) - In Mr. Arthur Hill's book: Man is a spirit, page 117, we read this story sent to the author by the percipient, Mrs. Janet Holt:
My husband brought a large bulldog dog home one day. He said that this animal would make him money by presenting him as a champion in bulldog fighting matches. The dog was called "Charles"; it was a good and affectionate animal whom I soon became very fond of. He was a winner in several battles, but one time he was defeated. My husband, irritated by the defeat, grabbed him and threw him into the river.
A few years later, when I had almost forgotten poor "Charles", I was woken up one night with a jolt, as if someone had shaken me to this effect, and I saw myself surrounded by a strange luminosity.
I sat on the bed and, to my amazement, I saw "Charles" sitting next to me. He seemed to be of normal proportions, absolutely identical to when he was alive.
He looked at me insistently for a while, after which he slowly faded. The next morning my husband was arrested. Maybe it is possible that "Charles" had manifested itself as a premonition.
My husband was a very bad man, and I had to part with him forever. He is currently in America.
