Background
The figure has staring and bulging eyes, denoting spiritual experience of some sort. The hand is protecting him from 'psychic attack', the skull is slightly elongated indicating either a natural deformation or head binding activity.
On a purely speculative note the woman may be the High Priestess helping him.
A description of the experience
Despite its extensive damage, this statue of a couple walking is one of the masterpieces of wooden statuary from the Old Kingdom. The two figures are standing side by side, the woman to the right of the man. She is much smaller, and, according to the conventions of Egyptian art, is slightly behind her partner; her left arm is wrapped tenderly around her husband's waist. 6th Dynasty - 2300 B.C.
