Dr. C. E. Simons tells us that in January 1890, when he was 23 years old and a medical student, he was once subjected to a strange phenomenon, when he and other classmates were preparing for the Faculty examinations. He writes:
« ... I felt like I was in a nightmare: I was unable to move in one direction or another and I felt hands and feet tied, I could only move my eyes all around, not even open and close my eyelids. I was fully aware of what was going on around me. I looked at the clock: It was 3:49 p. m. in the evening; I looked at the notebook on which friend H. wrote, observing that he was taking notes of the treatise: Matière Médicale (Medical Matter). I remained so for about three minutes, counted on the clock in front of me. Meanwhile I had the feeling of an unknown "force" paralyzing my movements, and this force seemed concentrated behind me, at a distance of about one meter, at the level of my shoulders.
"As I wondered to myself whether I was awake or not, I suddenly realized that I was dividing myself into two distinct beings, and the "force" in question had caused the phenomenon. One of these two beings lay inert on the couch; the other was free and moved in a restricted circle from where he could look at the second one nailed in place at will. Between the two there was an "elastic force", which prevented the bond between them from being broken. I could at will get the being in front of me to lie on the floor or circulate in the room a short distance from the other. When the distance between the two reached a certain limit, the "elastic force" that united them became tense. Beyond this limit (which revolved around two meters), no effort of will on my part could keep the fluid being further away, and when the limit was reached, I experienced a strong feeling of resistance "in both bodies".
"This phenomenon of "splitting" lasted even longer than five minutes. Then seemed to begin the fusion of the two beings, which I resisted, realizing that I could prevent it at will. Finally, out of curiosity, to find out what would happen, I let the merger take place, which was quick and uneventful. I then tried again to determine the separation, but the same "force" that had initially paralyzed my movements, now prevented me from repeating the duplication...
I had no sensation of waking up. The conditions in which I found myself dissipated simply and gradually. It should be noted that in the time of duplication, I had never ceased to wonder about what was happening to me, also taking care to observe what was happening around me, in order to verify, for a sufficient time, whether the observations made corresponded to the truth; and everything proved to be meticulously accurate...
For many years I have been a doctor, and although I have investigated everywhere to find out if anyone else has had experiences similar to mine, I have not been able to achieve any results. That's why I decided to communicate this adventure to the Society S. P. R. (Signed: Dr. C. E. Simons).
