Johannes Wilbert has reported that among the Warao of Venezuela, the hebumataro, or fire gourd, is the primary object of power after the sacred stone.
The first rattle was obtained when an ancestral shaman ascended to the place of the spirit of the South. During his visit, he received the sacred fire rattle and was given instructions about the creation of channels of communication with the supernatural so that he and his kind might never lose contact with the gods of the cardinal directions.
