A description of the experience
Dante – The Divine Comedy – paradiso XXI
I did not come to the end of what I was saying
Before the light, making its mid-point the axis
Whirled round and round like a quick millstone
And then the love that was within replied
'Divine light comes to a point upon me,
Penetrating what I am surrounded by,
The virtue of which, combined with my own sight,
Raises me so far above myself
That I see the supreme essence from which it is drawn
Thence comes the happiness I am alight with
For in proportion as my sight is clear,
So is the clarity of my flame.
