John Custance – Wisdom, Madness and Folly
If I look at this paper on which I am writing, feel the pen I hold in my hand, listen to the conversations I hear in the "refractory ward", in which I am writing it, how do I know that all or any of these things are "true" or "real"?
I am said to be "insane"; I have even a certificate to prove it of which I am inordinately proud. Why should I not be living in the midst of a completely hallucinatory world, visual, tactile, auditory and so on? It is absolutely impossible for me to prove to myself or to anybody else that I am not.
