A description of the experience
THE THREE TRENCHES.
“THREE circling trenches round my heart I throw,
To keep at bay each intermeddling foe.
Within the first the world may enter free,
Whate'er their sect, opinion, or degree;
Safe o'er the next, I greet a fair array,
Serenely smiling as a summer's day;
To pass the third, alas! how few contrive!
And of those dearest few, how few survive!"
