Background
Chaz Ebert is a Chicago lawyer and the widow of the film critic Roger Ebert.
She awoke the night that her first husband's father died to an encounter with 'the grim reaper'
A description of the experience
from an Interview with Studs Terkel: Will the circle be unbroken
"This sounds really crazy, I know," she told me. "I never believed in the grim reaper, I thought it was just some mythological thing." And yet, one night, she awoke in the darkness, opened her bedroom door, and encountered him.
"It had the monk's robe and the whole thing," she said. No face, "lit orbs where the eyes should be."
Somehow, telepathically, the figure conveyed that he wasn't there for her; instead he bade her look back toward the bed, where she saw a coffin, in which lay her father-in-law "This lasted for a few seconds, then it all disappeared."
She roused her husband to tell him what was happening. He said, 'l think you were dreaming.' I said, 'No, I wasn't dreaming, I'm awake!' So we go to sleep, and the next morning we call and they say his father died. His father died at the same time that the grim reaper came to my house."
