In a city near Boston, a nine-year-old girl was dying. She had just talked with her parents, indicating which of her things she wanted to leave to one or another of her girlfriends. Among them was a gracious child of her age named Jenny, and the dying girl had also assigned some of her toys as a souvenir.
Shortly after, as the hour of agony approached, she began to say that she saw around her the faces of friendly people, whom she named. She announced seeing, among others, her grandfather and grandmother; after which, in a loud surprise, she addressed her father, saying:
"Why, father, did not you tell me that Jenny was dead? Here she is, my Jenny, she came with the others to receive me."
Now, it should be noted that the dying girl was completely ignorant of what had happened to her girlfriend, because her parents had carefully avoided talking about it in her presence so as not to provoke the emotions that could be fatal to her. But little Jenny had actually died recently. This is the fact.
Now, it seems to me that it contains an element of an uncommon and persuasive nature. Indeed, if one can understand that the child could imagine seeing his grandparents, there was no reason for her to imagine Jenny too. Moreover, the fact that she had also intended to leave something for Jenny as a keepsake, the surprise and the words she used to utter her vision, prove that all this cannot be easily explained by means of the usual assumptions.
