Beth has experienced extreme pain in her life. She lost her first husband Ernest, to cancer in 1994, an emotional trauma that informed the writing of the songs for her album Sand and Water, released three years later.
The title song was so moving yet inspiring that Elton John chose it to replace Candle in the Wind in the set he performed on his world tour in 1997. Three years later, Beth herself was diagnosed with breast cancer.
