Transcendental Music

1-st case. - We read in l'Inconnu by Camille Flammarion ("Unknown", page 78):  A distinguished scientist, Mr. Alphonse Berget, doctor of science, assistant at the Sorbonne physics laboratory, and examiner at the Faculty of Sciences in Paris, kindly gave me the following report:

My mother had had, as a childhood friend, a young girl named Amelie M. Cette, a blind girl, who was the granddaughter of an old colonel of dragons from the First Empire. She remained an orphan and lived with her grandparents. She was a very good musician and often sang with my mother.

Around the age of 18, she decided for a very strong religious vocation and took the veil in a convent in Strasbourg. At first she wrote frequently to my mother, then these letters were written at intervals, and finally, as almost always happens in such cases, she completely stopped corresponding with her old friend.

She had been a religious person for about three years when one day my mother went up to the attic to look for something old in a storage room. Suddenly, she came back down to the living room, screaming loudly and fell unconscious. We rushed and picked her up, she came to her senses and cried out sobbing:

"That's horrible! Amelie is dying, she is dead, because I just heard her singing, like only a dead woman can sing!"

And, again, a nervous attack made her lose her senses...

With regard to these considerations of M. Flammarion, and to clarify the mystery surrounding the fact of the so strange, sometimes bizarre, at other times absurd forms in which telepathic manifestations occur, it is useful to note that the comparative analysis of facts shows how paranormal manifestations occur, in general, emerge from subconsciousness and reach consciousness following the "path of least resistance", determined by personal idiosyncrasies, specific to the agent and the percipient considered together. As a result, the transmission of a telepathic message can take place, sometimes in the visual form, sometimes in the auditory, tactile, olfactory, emotional form, taking rational or symbolic dimensions, often even of absurd appearance. It follows that if, in the case above, the telepathic message was resolved in the auditory-musical form, this means that this mode of realization constituted "the path of least resistance" for the transmission of the message, in accordance with the special idiosyncrasies of the agent and the percipient considered together, which were both musicians.
