The following text is taken from Light, 1912, p. 111:

In one of London's suburbs, there is a spacious, very old hotel, built entirely of bricks and surrounded by a garden, I know it very well. When my friends, the Rotherhams, went to stay there, the hotel was haunted.

Among other things, when Mrs. Rotherhams approached a door, it opened spontaneously in front of her. Sometimes she felt like her hair was being pulled out by invisible hands. Strange and inexplicable night-time noises, such as crashing crockery, dragged furniture, constantly disturbed the sleep of the house's inhabitants.

One night while Mr. Rotherhams was away, his wife went to bed, with her little child, in the room above the dining room. She had previously locked her dog, a "collie", in the dining room. She noticed that when the sounds of dragged furniture and crockery began to be heard, the dog began to howl plainly. The lady did not have the courage to go down to the lower floor to rescue him. When, in the morning, she opened the door of the haunted room, the dog came to her, with his tail between his legs. She noticed that the furniture, chairs and dishes were perfectly in place.

One day, the same lady was busy teaching her little girl a lesson in the dining room, and she was sitting in front of the door. At one point, having rung the bell to call the maid, she saw a door open and a lady entered who was wearing a strange greyish-white dress and with her face the same colour.

Another evening, while Mr. Rotherhams had lingered smoking in the room, he saw his dog jump up, his fur spiked on his back and growling mutely, facing the door. Looking in this direction, he saw the door open and the lady in blue entering. He immediately got up to meet her, but he could no longer see anything.

If this ghost had a purpose, it was to force the new occupants of the house to move, but they remained in their place intrepidly and the manifestations gradually weakened until they stopped altogether.

- Family members are healthy and strong people; and they are among my closest friends.
