Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Lots of people have guessed about the use for this, but given that one mechanism of achieving spiritual experience is simply to be placed in a drugged condition undergoing hyperthermia, hypothermia and dehydration, then this may have been the place where it was done - my guess is a good as everone else's!

Except that from this site I have a lot of observations from other cultures such as the Native American Indians and Australian Aborigines that show that some benign methods were used - suppression methods - and some very very non benign methods - fear, overload of emotion, pain, you name it, it was used.

They found a few skeletons here.  They do in many places where the candidates are initiated via overload methods.  Some simply don't make it.
