In Africa, all diviners who work with the spirits receive some form of baptism by water, or initiation at the hands of water beings – most often the Great Serpent himself who lives at the bottom of a deep river pool. Each person called to be a diviner falls sick and has a dream or trance experience of being taken down into a pool by a snake or by the force of a whirlwind/whirlpool
