Death and its Mystery, At the Moment of Death; Manifestations and Apparitions of the Dying – Camille Flammarion
Letter received from Hortense Code and Cecile Legendre, Saint-Joseph in Martinique, April 20th 1899
I was living in the country and had a room mate. My friend and I, having gone to town, went to see an old maiden lady who loved us dearly and who was about to die.
When we got back home we went to bed with the doors and windows closed. In the morning, about 6 o’clock, when we were still in bed and daylight had entered the room, I heard and saw simultaneously, the door being violently shaken.
With an instinctive movement, my companion and I found ourselves siting up, our eyes fixed on the door which, a second time, was energetically shaken.
‘Mademoiselle Theresa is dead’ I said ‘Let’s dress and go down’.
When we got to town we found our friend at the point of death; she did not die until two or three hours after the incident of the morning. I had no maid servant sleeping in the house or any domestic animal.
It is useless to add that the rooms were scrupulously gone over, and that every investigation made proved that this door could not have been moved by anyone at all.
For your research Mr Flammarion, I have asked my friend to sign, with me, the story of these occurrences as fresh in our memories as on the first day.
