Colin Wilson - Do not meddle with the spirits of the dead

Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
This quote comes from Colin Wilson, but it is a sentiment that I found repeated over and over again. There is a similar observation from G K Chesterton.
Ouija boards, for example, are likely to get you in touch with malicious, not friendly spirits because of the level you have tapped into. They could be disembodied or just very malevolent bodied living people, with greater skills and more inclination to do harm than the naive person summoning them.
If the communication is in words and sentences it is a bodied or disembodied soul. If the communication is symbolic, or uses words as puns, or is simply a ‘thought’ without words – an impression conveyed, communication is with a Spirit being , Spirit helper or Intelligence
A description of the experience
Colin Wilson - Mysteries
Half the spirits contacted by mediums are not what they profess to be but are merely the tramps, con-men and petty crooks of the spirit world, doing their best to swindle human beings out of a little energy.
When Alan Vaughan became possessed by the wife of the Nantucket sea captain; the entity who 'rescued' him made him first write out the sentence :
'Each of us has a spirit while living; do not meddle with the spirits of the dead.'
In other words, contact without the underlying knowledge of what you are doing could land you in the hands of unscrupulous entities..... when news of the 'Hydesville rappings', for example, spread across America, then to Europe, spirits were suddenly manifesting themselves all over the place, from New York to Vladivostock. Why? The answer is because thousands of people were suddenly holding seances and playing with ouija boards, actually offering the spirits their energy and attention.
'Waves' of strange phenomena seem to occur when there is a wide expectation of them. The same thing happened in Europe between 1700 and 1740, when there were literally thousands of reports of vampires.
