The music of Protestant sects has always been more conscious and specifically emotional. And has given a home to the more Dionysian impulses.

Examples include the Methodist sect called the ‘Jumpers’ or the present day Pentecostal and Revivalist sects which combine repetitive music with rhythmical music to induce a sort of ecstatic trance in which visions, glossalia and healing may occur.  However, the ecstatic states are not accompanied by any metaphysical understanding.  It is intoxication without knowledge
