A description of the experience
Mattheson Johann
Terrestrial music lets us hear a feeble echo of these sweet modulations which the ear of common mortals cannot grasp, and awakens in them the uplifting memory of what they heard in a previous life. Purifying their souls, it inspires in them a passionate love of divine things, it seizes them from the earth, to the point of making them forget to eat or drink and lifts their desires towards the starry heavens, which they will attain when they are free of their envelope of clay. Of all instruments, the 7 stringed lyre is the most apt for recalling to men the eternal concert of the grand cosmic symphony
