Background
Ta’wil is an interpretation of the Qur’an which includes attribution of mystic meaning to the text by the interpreter. Esoteric interpretations do not usually contradict the conventional interpretations; instead, they discuss the inner levels of meaning. Esoteric interpretations are found mainly in Sufism and in the sayings (hadiths) of both Twelver and Ismaili Shi'a Imams
